OpenAI, the AI research firm behind ChatGPT, has released a new tool to distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated text.

Before we dive into the details of the tool, let's get a brief idea of what is a classifier in terms of Machine Learning.

A classifier in machine learning is an algorithm that automatically orders or categorizes data into one or more of a set of “classes.” Machine learning classifiers go beyond simple data mapping, allowing users to constantly update models with new learning data and tailor them to changing needs.

OpenAI’s New AI Classifier for indicating AI-Written Text

OpenAI has launched its new AI Text Classifier that claims to limit the ability to run automated misinformation campaigns by use of AI tools for academic fraud and impersonating humans with chatbots. It has a vivid impact on journalists, mis/disinformation researchers, and other groups.

The classifier is fine-tuned to distinguish between text written by a human and text written by AIs from a variety of providers. This dataset was a combination of various human scripts such as the pretraining data and human demonstrations on prompts submitted to 

 (Text Generation, Language Translation, etc.).

Within the dataset, each piece of text is divided into groups of prompts and responses and the model when executed upon the prompt text results in responses of multiple language models. Each document is labeled as either very unlikely, unlikely, unclear if it is, possibly, or likely AI-generated.

Even though it’s impossible to detect AI-written text with 100% accuracy, OpenAI believes its new tool can help to mitigate false claims that humans wrote AI-generated content.

During the evaluation of the classifier, a challenge set was passed to the tool consisting of English text. The tool was able to correctly identify 26 percent of the AI-Written text which is a positive sign. On the other hand, about 9 percent of inaccuracy was observed where in the human text was labeled as AI-written text.


Since the classifier has been made public, there have been multiple speculations based on its performance. In an attempt to test it, the AI model was fed with 10 text samples generated by ChatGPT and it is ironic that only 4 of the samples were termed “likely” to be generated by an AI and 3 as “possibly” AI-generated which seems absurd as the model seems to fail at its own data.


The debate on AI-Classifier brewed when AI & ML researcher 

 tested the OpenAI classifier in ChatGPT with snippets from the initial pages of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the result showed “ The classifier considers the text most likely to be AI-generated” which is amusing.


The AI classifier cannot be employed as an all-around text differentiation tool due to its notable limitations.

It can be used as one of the fragments for authenticating text and not as the primary decision-making tool.

The classifier has language restrictions as it is mostly trained in the English language and can generate noticeable errors when working with other languages.

AI-written text can be edited to evade the classifier. Classifiers like this can be updated and retrained based on successful attacks, but it is unclear whether detection has an advantage in the long term.

For inputs that are very different from the text in our training set, the classifier is sometimes extremely confident in a wrong prediction.

The classifier is very unreliable on short texts (below 1,000 characters). There is inconsistency observed with the labeling of long-length texts as well.

OpenAI has not yet assessed the effectiveness of the classifier in detecting content written in collaboration with human authors.

Biting the Bitcoin

There is been a time when I and my friend struggled to find a way to deploy a python application to Heroku which has pyzbar package in it (for decoding scanned QR codes in our project).

Endless hours of google search, StackOverflow, and whatnot. After all this, I found a way to deploy them and I would like to share it here since I have seen that so many people around the globe are facing this issue.

Deploy Python Application with pyzbar package to Heroku

It seems Vi has decided to step up the game that it has long played with Airtel and Jio. They’ve hiked tariffs for prepaid mobile plans by 20–25%, and what’s
surprising is that this comes just months after they almost doubled their base 4G packs from ₹49 to ₹99. So why is Vi shifting to a more profitable approach rather than saving its already plummeting subscriber base? To answer this question, we’ll have to go back in time and explore the struggles that they’ve had in the last 5 years.

An Idea can change your life. This was the tagline of Idea Cellular, which was one of India’s largest telecom service providers back in 2014. But ideas can also
backfire, and when they do, especially in business, things are usually bound to go downhill. This started in 2015 when Jio entered the telecom industry with a bang.


It offered 4G services at extremely low rates to consumers. In fact, it was so low
that it was hard to even believe they would make profits out of it. But little did
everyone know that it was a game-changing plan for Jio to gain their subscriber
base in a short time. This led to millions of subscribers leaving Airtel and Idea and immediately switching to Jio.

While this was all good news for Jio, the other players in the market were having a tough time. Losing subscribers means losing recurring revenue, and when revenue falls short, the company goes into losses. To overcome this, Airtel and Idea tried to reduce their tariffs to lure back their lost subscribers. A few of them returned, but a large chunk of their subscriber base remained with Jio.

Idea Cellular and Vodafone India then took a major decision in 2017, to merge
together as one single company and take on the rising dominance of Jio in the
country. This merger did help them brag about their large subscriber base and
revenue, but it only lasted for a brief time. In 2018, Vodafone and Idea together
had a subscriber base of 408 million, but by September 2021, this plummeted to 253 million.

In 2019 came the infamous AGR fee issue. Back then, telecom operators were
required to pay a predetermined cost in order to get a telecom license, also
called an AGR Fee. However, this figure was so high that most people couldn’t
generate the financial clout to make the initial deposit. Hence, the government
switched to a different model and began collecting a modest cut of their revenues. Vi was already making deep losses, and all they could ask for was to
postpone their cut under certain conditions.

It’s been 2 years since then and Vi now owes a total debt of around 1.8 lakh
crores. What’s more shocking to know is that it only has cash reserves of around 250 crores! The telecom industry runs on expensive equipment, and to buy them, companies need huge investments. When you have too much debt and very little money on hand, it becomes almost impossible to invest in the future.


All that can be said right now is that Vi is treading on rough roads with a pile of
debt. The price hike may be of little support, but much is needed to cover all its
expenses while also providing good service to its existing customers.
